I’ve actually got a picture similar def, although nowhere as good as that of a frozen Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline that I took out of the window as we were coming in to land, few years back. And that was in March.

NS - Including the wind chill, parts of the Dakotas, Wisconsin and Minnesota had temperatures of -70 Fahrenheit (-56.7 C) This is an amazing photo of frozen Lake Michigan and Chicago.

Definitely a material change to the way the weather is now reported in this country
They are predicting 1-3 CMs in the South East tonight as if it's Armageddon.
Literally we have all become snow flakes !

The desert will do that as will the plains beside mountains.
Being hot at night is still one of the hardest things for me to get to sleep in. Not one bit of desire in me to vacation in the usual spots.

I must say when in Vegas in February a few years ago the first day was might chilly which to be fair we expected, but the next day was 20 degrees and lovely weather but it was bizarre experiencing it.

Too be fair you can see that kind of variation in one day in one place, where my mom lives.
Look up chinooks. (DiCaprio got upset about them when filming in Alberta once, blamed it on global warming)
The most extreme one went from −48 to 9 °C in 24 hours but more regularly it can go form -20 to 20 C in the same period.
As far as functioning in -40, you are set up to handle it once or so a winter. Clothes, block heaters on cars, everything is indoors. Much better heating systems.

If it's a "dry cold" it's also a lot more bearable than a "wet one" (Ooer, missus).
Winters in Den Haag seem much colder than winters in Stockholm (to my kids & I) even though the thermometer clearly states the opposite.

Some sort of polar vortex I believe crossing parts of the US and Canada? Jesus how on earth do people go outside in that??!!!
Interestingly I walloped Las Vegas and Orlando in as well and Orlando jumped from 10 to 27 degrees in one day and Vegas was hovering around the 15 mark, just shows how big the US and Canada are when you see the variation.

I delivered papers in similar. If it gets that low it tends to get very still. What is worse is -30 with a wind chill.

Just out of interest I put "Chicago" into the BBC weather app yesterday and it was -37 so I'm not going to grumble about a bit of snow when it comes!!!
